**An Unforgettable Grizzly Bear Adventure in Katmai National Park**
Our journey began early on a Thursday morning in Anchorage at the Alaska Alpine Adventures staging office. I met our guides, Lilly and Brian, along with eight other eager team members. We carefully went through our backpacks, double-checking that everyone had all the required gear for the adventure ahead.
Next, we headed to the airport for our first flight—a small two-engine plane from Anchorage to Lake Clark. At Lake Clark, we switched to a float plane for over an hour’s scenic flight to a remote lake deep in the wilderness. Here, we set up our base camp with tents for sleeping and a larger mess tent for meals and gatherings.
That very first evening, just before dinner, we were treated to a magical sight—two bears playfully interacting near the lake’s edge. It was a perfect welcome to this incredible wilderness.
Over the next four days, we hiked daily between five to six miles to reach the river where the grizzlies gathered. The hikes were moderately challenging, with the toughest part being the tundra—walking on it felt like treading on a soft, spongy carpet.
Imagine seeing over 100 different grizzly bears in just four days, each moment a rare opportunity to witness these magnificent creatures in their natural habitat. This trip was more than just a photography expedition—it was an awe-inspiring immersion into the wild heart of Alaska.
